On Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 1:30 PM, a special celebration for the life of BTW's own Ernie Banks was held at the Booker T. Washington High School For The Performing and Visual Arts.  A celebration at Booker T. Washington High School was long overdue for celebrated alumnus and baseball legend Ernie Banks.

Booker T can lay claim to being the lone high school in Dallas to produce a baseball Hall of Famer.

"An effort is underway to reclaim a piece of local history. There are plans to build a statue honoring Banks at Booker T. Washington High School, where he was a sports star in the late 1940s.  Plans are still preliminary — the statue has yet to be designed and thousands of dollars must be raised to pay for it — but local leaders are committed to boosting the Hall of Famer’s hometown profile.

Students at Booker T. — now an arts magnet with no athletic teams — will get a chance to help tell that story by participating in the design and creation of the statue."
